Chapters 4 and 5 Blog Response

What did Ben learn when he had to feed Father for the first time?  How does this change his understanding of Father's illness?

  1. I think that after Ben had to feed his father that he understood how serious palsy is. He realized that Father can`t do what he once could. He can't talk, he can`t hear, and, he can’t move which means that he can't feed himself. He learned that he and Nettie will have to take care of Father and do all the chores inside the house while Harrison builds the barn and tackles both jobs. His and Fathers.

    2. I like how you explain everything, but in the chapters that we have read it never says that they are going to build a barn.

  2. Ben learned that his father was so sick that he couldn’t even move. He realized that his fathers situation was worse than he could have of imagined. I think that Ben feels scared when he sees his father's condition.

    1. That is really good. what textual evidence supports that his father can`t move? And don`t you think it`s weird that Ben doesn't know how serious palsy is?

    2. I agree with you Haley, Ben’s father is very ill and cannot move. He is probably also really scared like you said.

  3. When Ben fed Father and he did not eat it and just sat there Ben understood that there was no hope of living when this sickness struck. All Ben did was run outside and feel small because there was nothing he could do.

  4. I think Ben just thought it was fever but when he had to feed Father he felt embarrassed for letting it dribble down his chin. He also felt very sad and depressed. At the end of chapter 4 it says, “I flung myself away and stood outside. The sky was dark and immense. The stars were far. And I felt so small.” I think Ben’s thoughts about the illness changed because he didn’t realize it affected Father’s brain.

  5. The thing that Ben learned about his father’s illness when he was feeding him was that he couldn't speak he just made faint gurgling noises. Ben’s father also couldn't understand anything. The only response he made was slight twitching.

    1. Madeline I think that response was good but what did Ben learn about the illness, did he realize it was really bad, did he feel scared?

    2. Madeline I like that you explained he twitched and made sounds. Ben’s father probably could hear but not that well.

  6. Ben learned that his father was more ill than he would have thought. I think he understands how ill father is, I think this because he can not eat without help eating. So that is how I think that Ben knows that father is very very weak and ill.

    1. Good job, but you only explained the illness and not so much how Ben feels. You only said what you thought Ben learned about his father's illness.

    2. Disagree with your statement about Ben thinking he will not get better I think it encourages Ben to offer to help with farm work.

  8. I think Ben learned that his father ‘s illness was so bad that he couldn't eat right because in the text it was saying that Ben had to scrap off the mashed potatoes that was coming out of his father’s mouth and putting it back in his mouth so Ben was feeding his father like a baby.

How does Ben think that palsy is worse, is it that he can't move, or that can not talk, or is it that he can't feed himself.

  11. Ben learned how sick his father was and how he could barely move on his own he couldn't move, he couldn't talk, and he can't eat on his own.

  12. When Ben found out that he needed to feed his father for the first time it changed his perspective about palsy and that it is a very serious illness if his father can not feed himself. I think he is sad that Father can not feed himself because he did not finish his own sentence.

  14. When Ben was feeding Father he learned that his Father's sickness was worse than he expected. This changes his understanding about fathers illness because Ben use to think that father could have feed himself but once Nettie told him he had to feed father that changed his understanding about this illness. His new understanding about the illness is it is a very BAD disease.

  17. I think that Ben's feelings of his dad has gotten worse overall because his dad has gotten worse and more ill and close to dying

  19. Ben thought his father was only sick. Then his brother and sister asked him to feed his father. He put the potato in front of him but father did not bite it or eat it. So Ben had to force it in fathers mouth. And the he realized something was very wrong with father.

  21. I think it changed Ben’s feelings about Father’s illness because even though that it seemed disgusting to feed father himself seemed babyish he felt better that his father was eating and that Ben knew more about Father’s illness.
